New Bern holds one of eastern North Carolina’s deepest and most inspiring chapters of African American history. From 18th-century free Black craftsmen to pivotal Reconstruction civil rights leaders, a walking tour of downtown reveals over 30 historic markers and preserved landmarks.

## Must-See Heritage Markers

**King Solomon Lodge No. 1:** Chartered in 1865 at Howard & Cedar Streets, this is North Carolina’s first Prince Hall Masonic Lodge, founded by Union veterans and community leaders.

**Charlotte Rhone Medical & Civic Legacy:** Honoring Craven County’s first Black registered nurse and North Carolina’s first licensed Black social worker, who led emergency relief after the Great Fire of 1922.

**St. Cyprian’s Episcopal Church:** Established in 1866, later founding St. Cyprian’s Hospital in 1900 to serve Black patients across Eastern NC.
