For thousands of years, indigenous peoples utilized these coastal waterways for trade, agriculture, hunting, and seasonal settlement, shaping the ecological and cultural landscape of Eastern North Carolina. ## The Tuscarora Nation & Pre-Colonial Settlements The primary indigenous group inhabiting the region prior to European contact was the **Tuscarora Nation**. The Tuscarora maintained sophisticated agricultural villages along the Neuse River basin, cultivating maize, beans, and squash while exploiting the rich marine life of coastal rivers and sound waters. The village of *Chattoka* (or Chattawka), located near the present-day site of New Bern, served as a major center for trade and diplomacy among regional tribes. The name “Neuse” itself derives from the Neusiok people, who occupied lands south of the river prior to their integration with the Tuscarora. ## Artifact Collections at the North Carolina History Center For visitors seeking to explore pre-colonial history, the **North Carolina History Center** at Tryon Palace provides an extensive collection of archaeological evidence: - **Woodland Period Pottery & Clay Vessels:** Intricately tempered pottery fragments illustrating ancient cooking and storage techniques along the Trent River. - **Stone Projectile Points & Tools:** Quartzite and chert spearheads, arrowheads, and scraping tools excavated across Craven County. - **Dugout Canoe Artifacts:** Reconstructions and preserved wood fragments demonstrating the advanced maritime navigation skills of the Tuscarora. ## Connecting Past and Present in Historic Downtown Understanding New Bern’s native heritage offers a deeper appreciation for the land upon which the colonial capital was constructed.
