Downtown New Bern: Crosswalk Enhancements Kick Off!
Get ready, New Bern! Our beloved downtown is about to get even better with vital crosswalk improvements. This isn’t just construction; it’s an investment in a safer, more beautiful, and more accessible urban core for all our residents and visitors.
While these essential upgrades are underway, residents can expect temporary changes to traffic flow and parking in the affected areas. Think of it as a brief intermission for a long-term enhancement! Pedestrian access will remain, but vehicle access will be restricted at each intersection for about 2-3 weeks as crews work diligently to install new concrete bases and charming brick pavers. Watch for clear detour signs and be mindful of equipment in reserved parking zones. This project, recommended by the Municipal Service District Advisory Committee and approved by the Board of Aldermen, is all about making our downtown safer and more aesthetically pleasing for years to come!
Date: Work begins Monday, May 11, 2026
Location: Downtown New Bern, with work proceeding sequentially at the intersections of:
- Hancock & Pollock streets (east side only)
- Craven & Pollock streets (all four crosswalks)
- Middle & S. Front streets (all four crosswalks)
Expected Duration: The entire project is anticipated to be completed within 8 weeks, with each intersection closure lasting approximately 2-3 weeks (weather and construction dependent).
Staying informed about crucial community projects like these helps us all navigate changes smoothly and appreciate the ongoing efforts to keep New Bern a vibrant and thriving place to live, work, and explore. Your understanding and patience during this period are invaluable as we collectively build a better New Bern!
So, mark your calendars and prepare for a smoother, more attractive downtown experience!
