Cheapest gas in New Bern right now

Here’s the regular-fuel snapshot we pulled on October 6, 2026. GasBuddy users and station owners posted these prices between 30 minutes and 7 hours before we checked.

Three quick takeaways:

  • Walmart wins this snapshot, and it beats the next-cheapest stations by three cents.
  • The spread is only 20 cents, from $3.76 to $3.96. Consequently, a detour for a few cents often costs more than it saves.
  • Three of the ten sit outside New Bern: River Bend, Bridgeton and Havelock. Skip them unless you’re already driving that way.

Prices change by the hour. Before you drive across town, open the GasBuddy app and check the report time. A six-hour-old price is a hint, not a promise.

How New Bern compares with the rest of North Carolina

First, the benchmark. AAA lists the North Carolina average for regular at $4.0930 on October 6, 2026, while the national average sits at $4.3685. So the lowest ten prices above run roughly 13 to 33 cents under the state average. aaa

That comparison comes with a catch. We’re setting a “cheapest stations” list against a statewide average, so of course it looks good. Still, the gap tells you something useful: shopping around in New Bern pays off.

Why gas costs so much right now

Prices have jumped over the past year. AAA reported on October 1 that September 2026 set a record, with a monthly national average of $4.33, and that crude was holding near $90 per barrel. A year ago, the national average was about $3.13. aaaaaa

North Carolina’s pump tax also plays a part. The state’s 2026 fuel tax is 41 cents per gallon, one of the highest in the country. That tax stays the same at every station, so it never explains why one pump costs more than the one down the road. Station margins and local competition do that. aol

Gas isn’t the whole story: diesel, premium and EV charging

The snapshot covers regular only. If you drive something else, expect a different picture:

  • Premium and midgrade: AAA puts the NC averages at $4.9685 for premium and $4.5699 for midgrade. aaa
  • Diesel: The NC average is $6.0019. If you haul a trailer or run a diesel truck, check prices before you leave. aaa
  • EV charging: The national average for public charging was 42 cents per kWh on October 1. We don’t have a verified New Bern figure, so check your charging app. aaa

Gas prices in nearby towns

Most drivers here cross town lines without thinking about it. River Bend, Bridgeton and Havelock appear in the snapshot above. Nearby communities such as Trent Woods, James City, Vanceboro, Grantsboro, Oriental and Bayboro also have their own stations. We don’t have verified prices for those towns today, so use the app’s map view before you commit to a longer drive.

7 ways to spend less at the pump

  1. Check the report time first. Fresh reports from the last couple of hours beat older ones.
  2. Compare along your route. The Neuse Blvd, MLK Blvd and Glenburnie Rd corridors all have several stations within a few minutes of each other.
  3. Don’t chase pennies. A 20-cent spread on a 12-gallon fill-up is about $2.40. Burning extra fuel to save it defeats the purpose.
  4. Look at grocery and big-box pumps. Walmart and Harris Teeter both appear in the top three today.
  5. Read the pump, not just the sign. Some stations post different cash and credit prices.
  6. Use a rewards or discount program if you fill up at the same chain often.
  7. Keep your tires inflated and your trunk light. It’s not glamorous, but it works.

A note for Cherry Point commuters

If you drive in from Havelock or the surrounding area, the Murphy USA on US 70 West shows up at $3.96 in this snapshot. Residents have swapped theories about prices climbing around payday. In 2023, one resident told WITN that stations in Jacksonville seemed to raise prices near military payday. That was one person’s observation in a news segment, not a measured trend. We haven’t verified it, so treat it as anecdote and watch the prices yourself. witn

Why is gas so expensive this fall?

Crude oil has hovered near $90 per barrel, and September set a national monthly record, according to AAA.

No. Our table shows regular fuel only. AAA’s statewide averages for the other grades are in the section above.
