The Vision: Empowering Our Elders in a Digital World
In today’s fast-paced, digitally driven world, access to technology is no longer a luxury—it is an essential bridge to healthcare, banking, civic resources, and family connection. From booking telehealth appointments to staying in touch with distant grandchildren, digital literacy is vital for everyday independence.
However, many seniors in Craven County have faced barriers with complex device interfaces and evolving software. The Tech Savvy Seniors Project was created to eliminate those barriers through patient, accessible, and friendly local instruction.
Bridging the Gap: What the Initiative Entails
The program is led by a committee of local New Bern volunteers, retired IT professionals, and student mentors from local high schools and Craven Community College. The curriculum focuses on practical, real-world skills:
- Smartphones & Tablets: Mastering navigation, adjusting accessibility settings, and managing apps on iOS and Android.
- Safe Web Browsing: Identifying phishing emails, recognizing online scams, and creating secure passwords.
- Video Calls & Messaging: Connecting effortlessly via FaceTime, Zoom, and group messaging to stay in close contact with family.
- Healthcare & Online Portals: Accessing local patient portals (such as CarolinaEast Health System), scheduling appointments, and managing prescriptions.
- Digital Banking & Everyday Tools: Securely checking balances, utilizing digital grocery delivery, and accessing municipal services.

Where Sessions Take Place & How to Participate
Workshops and walk-in tech labs are scheduled bi-weekly at the New Bern-Craven County Public Library (Johnson Street) and neighborhood partner hubs in Trent Woods and James City.
