Neuse River Environmental Update: Water Quality & River Conservation

New Bern residents and our neighbors, we have an important community update regarding the health of our beloved Neuse River. Sound Rivers announced on July 10, 2026, that four local sites failed their weekly recreational water-quality tests on the lower Neuse. These concerning locations include Lawson Creek right here in New Bern, Brices Creek in James City, Trent Woods on the Trent River, and Slocum Creek in Havelock. These results come from Sound Rivers’ vital Swim Guide program, which monitors our waterways throughout the summer season.

Why does this matter to you and your family? A ‘Swim Guide fail’ indicates elevated levels of fecal bacteria in the water. This means a higher risk of gastrointestinal illnesses and skin infections for anyone, or any pet, enjoying these waters – whether you’re swimming, fishing, or just letting your furry friends Right on off. Notably, Slocum Creek has failed every single weekly test since Memorial Day weekend, highlighting a persistent issue in that area.
