New Bern’s Geographic Risk Profile
Nestled at the confluence of the Neuse and Trent Rivers, New Bern has a long history of weathering major weather events—from Hurricane Florence in 2018 to seasonal tropical depressions. The unique topography makes storm surge vulnerability a key priority for low-lying historic neighborhoods, Downtown New Bern, River Bend, and Fairfield Harbour.

Essential Homeowner Storm Checklist
- Inspect Overhanging Tree Canopies: Remove deadwood and weak limbs within striking distance of rooflines before winds exceed 40 mph. Connect with local certified arborists through the Tree Service Direct Line.
- Test Sump Pumps & Check Backflow Valves: Heavy downpours can overwhelm older sewer lines. Schedule an inspection with Emergency Plumber Pros.
- Secure Crawlspace & Dehumidification Systems: Moisture intrusion can cause severe mold growth in humid coastal weather. Follow guidelines outlined in our Local Home Services Guide.
- Create an Evacuation & Supply Plan: Keep at least 3 days of non-perishable food, water (1 gal/person/day), medications, and flashlights on hand.
