The spirit of community and patriotism shone brightly this past weekend as our neighbors in Oriental celebrated their annual CroakerFest, a special edition marking America’s 250th birthday! Despite scorching temperatures that pushed the heat index to a blistering 106 degrees on Saturday, residents and visitors alike flocked to the festivities. The vibrant parade, awash in red, white, and blue, was a highlight, with floats and onlookers finding creative ways to stay Right on, including impromptu water hose showers from Mariposa owner Mo Jones. The event was packed with fun for all ages, featuring a bustling vendor market showcasing local artisans, a lively kid’s park, continuous music at Lou Mac Park, and a delicious food village. Congratulations also go out to the pageant winners: Estelle Dearing (Mini Miss Minnow), Everly Leonard (Miss Minnow), and Catherine Lackey (Miss Croaker), as well as all the talented bakers who impressed judges in the CroakerFest bake-off, particularly Christie Moser for her first-place White Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake.
This year’s CroakerFest truly underscored the resilience and unwavering enthusiasm of our local communities. Even with the challenging heat, the sheer turnout demonstrated how much these events mean to residents – providing a cherished opportunity to gather, celebrate our nation’s history, and enjoy the unique charm of our coastal towns. It’s a wonderful example of how regional events, like Oriental’s CroakerFest, not only entertain but also foster strong community bonds, support local businesses and talent, and create lasting memories for families, including many from New Bern who make the short trip to partake in the fun. From dazzling fireworks over the Oriental Bridge to the joy of candy hauls from the parade, the festival united people in a shared celebration.
The success of CroakerFest reminds us all of the invaluable role community events play in enriching our lives. Whether it’s in New Bern or our neighboring towns, these gatherings thrive on local support and participation. Let’s continue to champion and show up for these vital community celebrations, fostering a strong, connected, and vibrant Eastern North Carolina for Y’all. Support local, support community!
